The Khutbatul Haajah
Brothers and sisters, Allaahu (Subanahu wa ta`ala) has created us upon Al – Fitra, that natural inclination to worship Allaahu (Subhanahu wa ta`la) and to obey His commands. As Allaah azzawajal He said,
‘Allaah Azzawajal created mankind upon Al-Fitra, that natural state, that natural feeling, that natural inclination to worship Him alone and to obey His commands and to stay away from His prohibitions.’
The path of Al-Fitra is the loving of the truth and the detesting and hating falsehood, because the truth is sweet, it is delicious to the heart and falsehood is bitter to the soul. As Muad ibn Jabal said,
“There is light upon the truth because the truth is apparent and visible for anyone that wants it.”
That once Shaiykh-ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaahu ta’ala) said,
“The truth is loved through Al-Fitra.”
So Insha-Allaahu Ta`ala in this khutba, I will discuss those things that lead people to go astray because it will help us stick to the Truth by clarifying and explaining some of those affairs, that cause people to go astray because we are surrounded by people who are upon misguidance. Everyday we run into people that are upon falsehood, and sometimes we ask ourselves: ‘How can this be the case? Because the truth will give a person a life of enjoyment.’
The first thing brothers and sisters, from those things that lead people to go astray is (Al-Jahl) — ignorance. ‘The truth is clear and apparent, for those who want to become acquainted with the truth, it is easy for them to locate it and find it.
Allaah, He highlighted this in the Quraan saying,
“We have made this Quraan easy to understand and easy to recite”.
The Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi waa sallam) in the Sunnah emphasized this point:
‘Halaal is clear, Haraam is clear and between them are doubtful things.’
Brothers, ignorance allows falsehood to spread like a fire will spread in the forest. When the people are ignorant of the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi waa sallam), and the way of the companions, ‘ignorance’ will spread, ‘falsehood’ will spread like fire.
I will give a real life example, a historical example, that no two people can reject as mentioned by Shaiyk-ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah. He said:
“The one who innovated the belief of the Raafidah,(the person who innovated the belief of the Shia), he was a heretic, a disbeliever and an enemy to Islaam and the Muslims. He said, even though after that, we find the belief of the Raafidah affecting some of those people who possessed faith due to their extreme ignorance.”
So look Ikhwaan, a clear example how people accept falsehood and misguidance, the belief of the Shiaa Rafidah because they were ignorant, because if you don’t have knowledge, somebody may present to you filth and you may believe it to be gold. That’s why a jeweler is professional in his trade, because if someone brings him a fake diamond he can recognize it. So Ikhwaan our religion is more valuable than that. So you need to be able to recognize those who are lying and faking, from those who are upon the truth.
The second thing from those things that lead people to go astray is (Al-Khawf) fear. Allaah (azzawajal) informs us in the Quran, that, “fear prevented a people from believing in Musa because they feared the trials and persecutions that Fir’awn would inflict upon them”. Allaah said that, “only a few people from the offspring of Musa believed in him because they feared the persecution of Fir’awn and his chiefs”.
Another example from the Sunnah is Heraculis, when the pure true message of Al-Islaam in its perfect form reached him, he recognized it to be the ‘Haq’ – the Truth. Since he knew it was the truth, he invited his people to that message. But they refused and rejected it, so therefore he chose disbelief over Islaam even though the truth was clear to him. Why?? Because he feared the blame of the blames, he feared how people would respond to him.
Look at our times when people are scared to have a beard because they are worried what people may think about them. Women are scared to wear theie Islaamic dress because they are scared as to what people may think about them. Brothers and sisters are scared to take the true stance because they are scared of what people may think about them. If we behave in that way where we are scared of the people, we are cowards. Bravery is not to have a billion muscles on your body and pretend like your hard.
Bravery as the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) clarified ‘is to speak the truth, when you hear it or see it.’ As the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) said: ‘Do not let the fear of people prevent you from speaking the truth if you see it or hear it.’ That is the one who is brave, the one who remains silent when he sees falsehood being uttered, but he is scared to accept the truth because he is worrying about the reaction of the people is a coward, whether he is happy with that or not.
The third thing from those things that lead people to go astray is Al-Kibr, haughtiness, arrogance. — ‘I already know that’ —- ‘I’m better than him.’
Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) clearly explained what arrogance is. Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) said in an authentic Hadith, “No one will enter paradise with a mustard seed of haughtiness, arrogance or pride in their heart.’ Ibn Umar, when he heard this Hadith he started to cry because he understood the gravity of these words that ‘none will enter Paradise if he has a mustard seed of pride or arrogance in his heart, because arrogance and pride will cause one to reject the Truth.’
The Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) explained what arrogance is, when he said, “arrogance is that you reject the Truth and you look down upon the people, that is why people who are arrogant they don`t learn, you find that they stay ignorant most of the times.
The fourth thing that leads people to go astray is to depart from the truth, to accept falsehood is Al-Hasad, jealousy. Some of the Salafs said: the first sin wherein Allaah azzawajal was disobeyed with in the Heavens was envy and jealousy. Iblees was jealous and envious of Aadam due to the station that Allaah azzawajal gave Aadam. So he refused to prostrate to Aadam, a prostration of respect. And he chose disbelief over Imaan because he was envious and jealous. Look how envy can cause a person to lose his mind, like envy and jealousy was the cause of one of the first sins to occur on the earth. Envy and jealousy caused the brothers of Yusuf (alai salaatu waassalam) to plot against him and try to harm him.
Envy and jealousy, it caused the Yahood, who were present at the time of the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) to reject the message of Muhammad (alaisalaatu wassalam). They used to boast about the coming of a prophet from amongst their midst and they would boast that he is an illiterate Arab but when the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) appeared, they rejected the message of the Muhammad (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) because they were jealous that the Prophet did not come from their race. As Allaah azzawajal informs us in the Quraan,
“Those whom We gave the scriptures, they recognized Muhammad (sallallaahu alaihi waa sallam) like they recognized their own children”.
With regards to envy and jealousy there is an Arabic saying, “people in the same profession, they would tend to hate and be jealous of one another”. So if a brother is a builder, many times you will find that he will hate upon the work of other people, except if Allaah saves him from them. Even students of knowledge as Shayyk Ibn Uthaimeen said, “people who have knowledge, they may be jealous and envious of the next person because of the acceptance that they have and therefore they speak against them based upon jealousy”. Envy and jealousy is something that could corrupt a person’s worldly affairs and harm their Hereafter.
The next thing that could cause a person to go astray, (may Allaah azzawajal make us firm upon the Haq) is mixing with the people who are upon falsehood, misguidance, wickedness and bad companionship. Allaah warns us against mixing with these types of people for this reason that they could influence you and affect you and cause you to go astray. They can invite you to the disobedience of Allaah and you may have been a person that was busying yourselves with things that Allaah loves and is pleased with.
Allaah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) said,
“if you see those people that argue and dispute about Our verses, people of falsehood, people of misguidance then stay far away from them.”
And that’s why the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) said in an authentic Hadith well known to us: “the blacksmith which is the like of a bad companion, either he will burn your garments or you will get from him a repugnant smell”. So anyone who mixes with people upon ‘fujoor’ — wickedness and sin or people who are upon innovation and misguidance, as Al-Fudail ibn Iyaady said, “the one who mixes with the people of innovation or a person likewise with wickedness, he will not been given (Hikmah) — wisdom, because wisdom will tell you to run away from that person like you run away from a lion, because if you mix with them it could cause you to depart and deviate from the truth. That is why the Salaf, they would warn against the people of innovation.
The last thing Ikhwaan, and there are many and it is impossible to mention all of them right now. But the last one InshaAllaah that we will finish with is (Ad – Dunoob) sins. Sins are another thing that causes people to go astray. Allaah azzawajal warns us against sin. “In their hearts there is a sickness and Allaah azzawajal will increase that sickness”. Ad-Dunoob, disobeying Allaah azzawajal could cause a person to go astray. When they started to deviate, Allaah azzawajal caused their hearts to deviate.
Shaykh ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah said, “Like if a person was to shut their eyes, their two eyes, even though they are not blind. they will not be able to see anything. If you shut your eyes for a moment you will not be able to see anything even though you are not blind, even though you have been blessed with sight. He said, “likewise the heart, the heart if it is covered in sin, it will not be able to recognize the truth, even though the heart is not blind with the blindness of (Kufr) disbelief”.
So brothers,‘sins blind the hearts.’ That is why Allaah azzawajal said, “Do not be like those people who forgot about Allaah, and Allaah azzawajal caused them to forget their own selves. “how do you forget yourself? You forget yourself by being unable to recognize that which is ‘maslaaha’ — beneficial from that which is harmful, and you will view that which will bring about your destruction as being enjoyment and you will view that which is beneficial for you Dunya and Hereafter as being something repugnant.
So brothers, sins, imagine what would happen to you if you closed your eyes and left this place to go home? If you close your eyes and go you would never make it home. So imagine the person whose heart is blinded by sins, imagine how his path to please Allaah would be? It would be difficult because he is blind. That is why we are not heedless and slack about these things. The religion of Allaah azzawajalis balanced. We don’t go to extremes and we don’t fall short. May Allaah make us firm upon the truth and protect us from anything that may lead us to go astray. May Allaah azzawajal make us firm upon the Haq and may Allaah allow us to see the importance of remaining firm upon the Haq, and may Allaah azzawajal allow us to repeat that supplication that the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) would repeat frequently,
“Oh! The One who changes the hearts, make my heart firm upon your religion”.
