Hadith on Succession: The Prophet chooses Abu Bakr to lead the prayer in his place


Abu Musa reported: The Prophet, peace be upon him, became ill and when his disease was aggravated, he said, “Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.” Aisha said, “He is a soft-hearted man and he will not be able to lead in your place.” He said again, “Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.” She repeated her concern again but he said, “Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer; verily, you are the companions of Joseph.” So the Messenger of Allah took his order to Abu Bakr and he led the people in prayer during the lifetime of the Prophet.

Ibn Hajar comments, “The similarity between Aisha and the companions of Joseph was that the wife of Al-Aziz had invited some women to honor them with a royal feast but her real motive was that she wanted to show the beauty of Joseph, upon him be peace, to them; and Aisha’s apparent motive for asking the Prophet, peace be upon him, to spare her father from the position of leadership in prayer was that the believers would not be able to hear his recitation due to his weeping. However, the more complete meaning is her motive was she feared other people might see a bad omen in him. It is reported by Al-Bukhari on the authority of Aisha that she said: I persisted in my request to the Messenger of Allah as much as I could, because it never entered my heart that the people could ever love a man who took the Messenger of Allah’s place.”

عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى قَالَ مَرِضَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَاشْتَدَّ مَرَضُهُ فَقَالَ مُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ إِنَّهُ رَجُلٌ رَقِيقٌ إِذَا قَامَ مَقَامَكَ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ قَالَ مُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ فَعَادَتْ فَقَالَ مُرِي أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ فَإِنَّكُنَّ صَوَاحِبُ يُوسُفَ فَأَتَاهُ الرَّسُولُ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ فِي حَيَاةِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

قال ابن حجر وَوَجْهُ الْمُشَابَهَةِ بَيْنَهُمَا فِي ذَلِكَ أَنَّ زُلَيْخَا اسْتَدْعَتِ النِّسْوَةَ وَأَظْهَرَتْ لَهُنَّ الْإِكْرَامَ بِالضِّيَافَةِ وَمُرَادُهَا زِيَادَةٌ عَلَى ذَلِكَ وَهُوَ أَنْ يَنْظُرْنَ إِلَى حُسْنِ يُوسُفَ وَيَعْذُرْنَهَا فِي مَحَبَّتِهِ وَأَنَّ عَائِشَةَ أَظْهَرَتْ أَنَّ سَبَبَ إِرَادَتِهَا صَرْفَ الْإِمَامَةِ عَنْ أَبِيهَا كَوْنُهُ لَا يُسْمِعُ الْمَأْمُومِينَ الْقِرَاءَةَ لِبُكَائِهِ وَمُرَادُهَا زِيَادَةٌ عَلَى ذَلِكَ وَهُوَ أَنْ لَا يَتَشَاءَمَ النَّاسُ بِهِ وَقَدْ صَرَّحَتْ هِيَ فِيمَا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَتْ لَقَدْ رَاجَعْتُهُ وَمَا حَمَلَنِي عَلَى كَثْرَةِ مُرَاجَعَتِهِ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَقَعْ فِي قَلْبِي أَنْ يُحِبَّ النَّاسُ بَعْدَهُ رَجُلًا قَامَ مَقَامَهُ أَبَدًا
